Medical Practitioner Registration Under Section 29

What is Registration?

Medical Council registers Medical Practitioners under Section 29 of the Medical Ordinance when eligible applicants are applied for such registration. This is the legal registration done by the SLMC and this registration is sometimes referred to as “Full Registration” or “Permanent Registration” in certain documents for clarity.

Who can apply?

This online registration system enables the registration with the SLMC who have fulfilled the following requirements.

1. Who is of good character
2. Hold a Degree of Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery or equivalent Degree confirmed by the recognized university according the Medical Ordinance
3. Who has paid the prescribe fee
4. Has satisfactorily completed the prescribed period of internship in one or more hospitals/institutions approved by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), after obtaining provisional registration from the SLMC, and has submitted a certificate from the respective hospital(s) confirming the satisfactory completion of the approved training period in the subjects specified by the SLMC. Such certificate shall be duly signed by the relevant supervising consultant(s) and the Director of the hospital

Please note as per provision of the Medical Ordinance:

1. “a person who is not citizen of dual citizen of Sri Lanka shall not be registered. Except with approval of “HE The President on recommendation of the Minister”
2. No person under age 21 years shall be registered.

How often is this service available?

Registration of Medical Practitioner under Section 29 will be done immediately after the competition of internship. As internship is given in batches, the SLMC will publish a notice and open the Registration Portal for specific period of time to receive applications. All applicants are requested submit their application during the period during where portal is open to maximize the efficiency of the registration process. Any applicant who could not submit during the prescribe period may make special request to council to open to portal giving valid reasons for the not applying on time.

Fees for the Current Registration Process

Applicants are required to make the payment through the integrated online payment portal as part of the application process. Therefore, applicants are advised to have a valid local or international credit/debit card ready to complete the payment successfully.

The current applicable fee for the Registration under section 29 is Rs. 10500/-
